Although I applaud Mr. Damon’s speech in the preceding post, it seems we owe a bit to the ladies at The View for asking the tough(er) questions. What hurts me, though, is that when pressed on (the outright lying nature of) the content of his ads, he replied: “They’re not lies.”

MATT DAMON WINS

best commentary on Palin so far. Watch the whole thing.
Also, I commend The View (never thought I’d say that) for being the first media outlet to use the word “lies” to McCain’s face when describing his ad campaign.

Oh, Italy

Hat tip to the Volokh Conspiracy for this gem:
An Italian comedienne who said that Pope Benedict XVI would go to Hell and be tormented by homosexual demons is facing a prison term of up to five years.
Addressing a Rome rally in July, Sabrina Guzzanti [said,] … after warning everyone that within 20 years Italian teachers would be vetted and chosen by the Vatican, … “But then, within 20 years the Pope will be where he ought to be -— in Hell, tormented by great big poofter devils, and very active ones, not passive ones.” …
She is facing prosecution for “offending the honour of the sacred and inviolable person” of Benedict XVI.
Europe doesn’t have the same dedication to free speech that us Americans do (see: criminal prohibition on denying the holocaust). It is one of the reasons I stick around.

Sweet Jesus I Hate These People

In all honesty, I would post this quote if anyone of any importance had spoken it since it is so disgustingly false:
Gov. Sarah Palin linked the war in Iraq with the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, telling an Iraq-bound brigade of soldiers that included her son that they would “defend the innocent from the enemies who planned and carried out and rejoiced in the death of thousands of Americans.”
Has she even been paying attention? Or is she so caught up in the partisan justification of the war in Iraq that she cannot even tell the truth when her son is starting his tour.
I give up.

Questions
September 12, 2008 · 5 Comments
So Live Free or Die sent me this article from The Nation outlining the questions Palin should answer if the press ever grows a pair (I am paraphrasing). Anyway, to give you an example of the type of stuff the author asks, here are two of her questions:
1) Forty-seven million Americans lack health insurance. John Goodman, who has advised McCain on healthcare, has proposed redefining them as covered because, he says, anyone can get care at an ER. Do you agree with him?
2) What is the function of the Federal Reserve?
The questions address a range of problems some people may have with her candidacy and they fall into a couple of categories, ranging from questions of experience to questions about her previous policy statements. Anyway, here is my proposal: why don’t some of you come up with some questions that you want her to ask. I will submit a couple too when I get to thinking about it. Anything is fair game. Of course, no one will answer these questions but they will be a useful excercise in demonstrating the span of issues on which she has no stated policy stance or on which her policy stance would require some delicate explanation.

Quote of the Day; September 12th, 2008

Now, I don’t think Rev. Wright’s comments as Pastor are fair game. His videos, however, became quite the rage during the primary and the early general election. Since Obama “hates America” because his Pastor said some things (most of which I agree with) that criticized it, I think it is similarly fair to say that Palin “hates gays” because her Pastor had this to say:
Everybody in the world has a guilty conscious. That’s why homosexuals want laws of the land to justify their sickness. They have a guilty conscious.
Justify their sickness? Geez. That’s pretty harsh.
