Half-ton woman indicted in slaying of nephew, 2
EDINBURG, Texas (AP) – Prosecutors are trying to decide how to jail and bring to court a nearly half-ton, bedridden woman accused of killing her 2-year-old nephew.
A grand jury on Thursday indicted Mayra Lizbeth Rosales, 27, on one count of first-degree murder and on one count of injury to a child in the death of Eliseo Gonzalez Jr. She previously had been charged with capital murder.
Rosales weighs nearly 1,000 pounds and cannot fit through a door to leave her home, leaving prosecutors wondering how to bring her to court. As of Thursday evening, she was not in custody.
Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Trevino said holding her at the county jail for her trial would be impossible because she needs extensive medical care.
Don’t Miss
“She would die,” said Trevino in Thursday’s online edition of The Monitor in McAllen.
The grand jury indicted Rosales after an autopsy confirmed investigators’ suspicions that the child died March 18 because he had been struck. Investigators believe the toddler was struck at least twice, crushing his head.
Authorities recommended Rosales’ bond be set at $150,000.
The boy’s mother Jaime Rosales, was charged earlier with injury to a child because she allegedly left her son alone with his aunt. Her bond has been set at $100.000.

Don’t think too fast folks…this isn’t disgraced former senator and VP and Presidential candidate John Edwards, but this is rather Rep. Chet Edwards from Texas.

Hallmark Introduces “Wedding” Cards for the LGBT Community
August 22, 2008 · Leave a Comment
It appears that all-American greeting card company Hallmark is finally starting to get with the times. The greeting card giant has introduced same-sex wedding/commitment ceremony cards, “featuring two tuxedos, overlapping hearts or intertwined flowers.” Evidently the language inside the cards doesn’t explicitly mention “marriage” (as let’s be honest, only two states in the union really allow that official title as of yet) but rather uses more neutral terms to suggest the celebration of a committed love. Kudos to Hallmark for keeping up with the times and not being stifled by conservative America. And also to the designers of these new cards, as these two tuxedos look pretty cute!

Do the polls reflect youth voters?
August 22, 2008 · 4 Comments
On Super Tuesday, according to MTV.com, nearly 4 times the amount of voters came out and voted in each states primaries than they did in 2000. A large number of this has come from younger or first time voters.
Lately, we have seen in polls McCain grow ever closer in numbers to Obama. My question I throw out to readers is: How accurate do the polls show reflection of the increase of youth voting?
http://elections.foxnews.com/2008/07/28/youth-vote-obama-v-mccain/
According to this FOX News report, 55% of voters 18-34 favor Barack Obama as opposed to just 31% who favor John McCain. Meanwhile, the polls show Obama leading 44-42% over McCain. Are the media outlets really reaching the 18-34 year olds of our country? In years past, the politicians have came out and focused on the elderly, and the middle aged. This year, we see more and more outreach to voters. Walking the streets you can see young adults flashing their political beliefs, and on college campuses all throughout America the buzz about this election is growing ever so larger. However, you can’t help but feel the media does not take the youth of America seriously. They feel that American college students are going to be too busy playing frisbee on the quad to actually take their time out and vote. Sure, they’ll cover the youth vote but how about we come out and vote…but how about we see some reflection in the polls. If 55% of young Americans 18-34 are going to come out and support Obama, shouldn’t his margin be significantly higher than just 2%? The poll was taken on July 28th, voters might have swayed different ways but I still just have the sneaking suspicion that the media still does not take the youth of this country seriously enough. My call is to the media outlets, reach out to more younger voters because I feel we will have the greatest impact we ever have had in any election ever.

The Wealthy Wives- An Issue?
August 22, 2008 · Leave a Comment
Salon.com comments on the unsurprising inconsistency of the right-wing slime machine when it comes to candidates marrying into wealth. The opening paragraph (the full article has numerous references to lovely quotes by Limbaugh, Coulter, et al):
What’s most notable about John McCain’s confusion over the number of homes he owns isn’t merely that it demonstrates that, after running his campaign based on depicting Barack Obama as an out-of-touch elitist and himself as the all-American Everyman, McCain lives a life that is about as far removed from the Average American as one can get, and has done so for decades. What’s notable is how McCain was able to live that way. McCain himself isn’t actually rich. He just lives off the inherited wealth of his much younger, former mistress and now-second-wife — for whom he dumped his older and disfigured first wife — and who then used her family’s money to fund his political career and keep him living in extreme luxury (while insisting that he sign a prenuptial agreement, which would make McCain the first U.S. President to have one).
Ouch.

1) Mets defeated and swept a pathetic Braves squad (I almost felt bad) and the Yanks were pwned by the Blue Jays 14-3. I take no pleasure in saying that I think the Yankees are done for the year.
2) The McCain campaign has made clear that candidates’ stance on abortion will be important in McCain’s assessment of them for veep (countering McCain’s earlier flirtation with considering a pro-choice candidate), while Obama has made a decision- but won’t tell anyone.
3) Following the Trader’s post on sex at the Olympics, let the games begin.
4) The Bush administration has proposed a regulation that allows medical service workers to refuse to provide services that violate their religious beliefs. Abortion comes to mind. I am torn on this issue- while I am pro-choice, I also find it unpalatable to force individuals who are pro-life to carry out procedures that violate their religious beliefs. Thoughts?
5) Princeton economist Paul Krugman writes in his column today that Obama isn’t going to raise taxes on the middle class- not by “any reasonable definition.” Worth a quick read.

Care of Time/HuffPost:
AUG 21 — Halperin: McCain Settles On Romney: TIME’s Mark Halperin cites two unnamed Republican sources saying that McCain has settled on Romney as his VP nominee:
Two Republicans who know say McCain has settled on Mitt Romney as his running mate.
Developing…Meanwhile: If you are the wagering type, bet on Obama announcing Joe Biden as his running mate on Saturday.
Late update – Halperin has added to his post on Romney:
Two additional GOP sources say McCain had not offered the slot to anyone as of Thursday night, and that he could still change his mind.

The Truth Behind the Olympics
August 22, 2008 · 1 Comment
So I was glancing around the web this morning and I came across a very intersting article. Now, we had all joked about how, after these Olympic Games, Michael Phelps would never have to work to get some ever again. I just wasn’t aware of how soon his efforts would pay off. This is an article from the Times online, a British newspaper. As such, it is written in a more laid back manner than we Americans are used to with our journalism.
Sex and the Olympic city
Tomorrow night thousands of young men and women with the most fit, toned bodies in the world will mingle for the last time before they fly home. What might they get up to?
