Getting a Little Much

August 11, 2008 · 3 Comments

I am still not totally convinced (maybe because I thought they had some decency) that the McCain campaign is playing on American tradition of fearing/hating relationships between black men and our precious white (blonde) daughters, but this ad is really pushing it. This is the second ad in their “celebrity” attack theme that has used white blonde women, almost exclusively, to talk about Obama’s superficial attractiveness. Even the dude at the end of the ad says “hot chicks like Obama.” Unfortunately, if Obama responds, he is “race-baiting.”

Barack Roll’d

August 11, 2008 · 1 Comment

For my first post, I would like to distract and confuse.  Really, though, I feel like hearing those words from Barack… just feels right.   He is never going to let us down.

Additionally, I would like to formally request that Amy fill us in on the Russia/GA battle seeing as how we’ve all seemed to clear our throats just to announce that we aren’t informed enough to have an opinion worth its weight in kopecks, and she chimed in just to say that she is informed and does in fact have an opinion (possibly: lots of them) but seemingly out of spite, does not share it (them?).

And finally, I would like to add with relish that the Ron Paul campaign is still going. It is a campaign for liberty, don’t you know.  No, Dr. P. isn’t running for president anymore (though, I know at least one person voting for him [hint: he has two thumbs]), but he does have a list of characters he approves for on both federal and state levels.  Instead of blindly checking off “ALL DEMS” or “GO TEAM BLUE” or “F#$K BUSH” (however the “give me all the libs you can find” option is listed on your ballot) you might want to thumb through this list, possibly also: On Liberty.

Obama Responds With Own Celebrity Attack Ad

August 11, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Now, I’m not terribly happy that Obama even responded to McCain’s criticism that Obama is a celebrity (that is, too many people like him), but now that he has I am glad that the ad addresses McCain’s celebrity in the Senate/Washington- which may actually relate to his fitness for the presidency.

MURR

August 11, 2008 · Leave a Comment

i am so sad that i missed the PSAP convention in dc. what the fuck. i’m still inwardly throwing a temper tantrum….. can i have a hug please? (there’s no way of getting out of it. chris, it was k-ci’s birthday on friday and, as all of you know, my mom doesn’t let anyone get away with missing family events… sigh)

with that being noted, I hope you all had a wonderful time and will be sure to provide me with stories and loads of extra love when we see each other again so i dont feel so shafted. or hormonal. what? who said that? haha, ewwie, just kidding.

more to follow regarding kate’s post (Beyonce is more than welcome to have some of my whiteness whenever she wants), the territory conflicts between Georgia and Rossiya (i wrote a huge paper on this as an independent study while in Moscow), and ramblings whose topics are TBD.

finally, to be spiteful, i hope you’re all still nursing your hangovers. i love you and i’m SO SAD. lol

The Whitening of Women

L'Oreal's most recent campaign photo, at right.

L'Oreal's most recent campaign photo, at right.

Nearly everyone is aware of the large scale airbrushing that goes into glossy magazine photos, primarily for women, in order to “smooth over” any slight imperfections that may occur (this can of course range from a pimple on the day of a photo shoot to oh, say, 25 pounds that are always there).  Many of you may remember Keira Knightly recently protesting the “upgrading” of her breasts in the photo ads for one of her new movies, but this was the exception to the rule.  Most of the time this stuff goes undiscussed and largely unnoticed.  This time, however, L’Oreal is coming under some scrutiny for what is a fairly obvious “whitening” of Beyonce for their newest ad campaign.  The image above juxtaposes the campaign photo with a recent shot of Beyonce at an event.  It seems pretty obvious to me, but L’Oreal claims they did not lighten her image.  Sounds like a bunch of hooey to me.  The mass airbrushing that goes on to “perfect” women’s real traits is bad enough, but this seems particularly egregious.  And certainly sends a pretty poor image to the millions of girls constantly bombarded with these sorts of messages. Thoughts?

We helped in Iraq – now help us, beg Georgians

August 11, 2008 · Leave a Comment

As a Russian jet bombed fields around his village, Djimali Avago, a Georgian farmer, asked me: “Why won’t America and Nato help us? If they won’t help us now, why did we help them in Iraq?”

A similar sense of betrayal coursed through the conversations of many Georgians here yesterday as their troops retreated under shellfire and the Russian Army pressed forward to take full control of South Ossetia.

Well, should we do anything? We are certainly losing some fans in Georgia by completely ignoring their loyalty to the United States. Then again, it may not be worth pissing off Russia. I don’t know enough about this stuff to have an informed opinion.

The Tax Plans

August 11, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Depending on your career aspirations, Obama’s plan may be a relief, or an unimaginable burden. At age 22, however, it is hard to sympathize with the $2.87 million+ bracket. If the image isn’t clear on your screen, click on it for the original.

Morning News; August 11th, 2008

August 11, 2008 · Leave a Comment

1) Forget New York Baseball, this weekend was all about the U.S. Olympic team: Lebron and Co. reminded the world that (when they try, at least) the U.S. “Redeem Team” is simply in a different class than everyone else and, most importantly, Jason Lezak swiftly shut-up the French by swimming the fastest 100m split of all time anchoring the world record relay that out-touched the French by .08. The French had come to crush the U.S.- and Phelps chance of winning eight golds- but they were unsuccessful.

2) Edwards admitted his affair, Maureen Dowd has her own theory, and anyone who had chosen him as a VEEP nominee should probably withdraw their bet.

3) Allegations of insider trading emerge in the Bear Stearns case:

In a gambit with such low odds of success that traders question its legitimacy, someone wagered $1.7 million that Bear Stearns shares would suffer an unprecedented decline within days. Options specialists are convinced that the buyer, or buyers, made a concerted effort to drive the fifth-biggest U.S. securities firm out of business and, in the process, reap a profit of more than $270 million.

4) Russia issues an ultimatum to Georgia, in what seems to be one of the least discussed military action in recent memory. Superb timing on the part of the Russians to invade during the Olympics.

Since everyone has returned from the PSAP D.C. convention, more posts will be forthcoming.
